The short answer

Apply 3 to 5 drops of cyperus rotundus oil per area to clean, dry skin right after hair removal, massage until absorbed, and repeat every morning and night. Keep going on the days you don't remove hair, and give it 4 to 8 weeks for slower, finer regrowth. That's the routine behind Bare Oil, whose star ingredient was found as effective as an Alexandrite laser for underarm hair in a randomized clinical study.

The 6-step routine

  1. Patch test. Apply 1 drop to the inner arm and wait 24 hours before the first full use.
  2. Remove hair your way. Shave, wax, sugar, epilate, tweeze or thread as usual.
  3. Clean and dry. Rinse with cool water and pat the skin dry.
  4. Apply. 3 to 5 drops per area (1 to 2 on the face) on clean, dry skin. Massage until absorbed.
  5. Repeat morning and night. Every day, including days you don't remove hair.
  6. Stay consistent. Give it 4 to 8 weeks for visible change, and keep going for results that build.

How many drops per area

Area Drops per application Guide
Chin, upper lip, jawline 1 to 2 Facial hair
Underarms (each) 3 to 5 The laser study
Bikini line 3 to 5 Bikini line
Lower leg (each) 3 to 5 Leg photos
Arms, chest, stomach, back 3 to 5 per area Guide for men

Bare Oil's listed recommended uses: arms, back, bikini line, chest, face, legs, lip, stomach and underarms.

When to apply: timing is everything

Right after hair removal is the golden moment. Shaving, waxing, sugaring and epilating leave the skin clean and the follicles open. Apply as soon as the skin is dry (after waxing or sugaring, once any redness has calmed).

Morning and night, every day. Hair grows in cycles, so the oil needs to be there when each follicle becomes active. Skipping days is the number one reason results take longer.

On the days in between, keep applying. You don't need to remove hair every time.

"I usually buy products, get excited about them for three days, and forget they exist 😂 But I actually used this one consistently until the bottle was almost empty. I love how soft it leaves my skin, and I've been happy with my experience so far. Already planning to get another one!"

"What I like most about Bare Oil is how simple it is. I use a few drops after removing unwanted hair and let it absorb before getting dressed. No complicated routine, no heavy residue, and my skin feels smooth and moisturized. It's become one of those products I didn't know I needed until I tried it."
Jaclyn P. ✔ Verified buyer
"I was surprised by how little product I actually need each time. A few drops go a long way, and I love how easily it spreads over my legs. It's become my go-to after shaving, especially when I want my skin to feel soft and look its best."

How to use it with each hair removal method

Shaving Immediately after, once skin is patted dry
Waxing Once skin has calmed, then morning and night

7 mistakes that slow your results

  1. Only using it on hair removal days. Twice a day, every day.
  2. Quitting at week 2. Hair changes show from weeks 4 to 8.
  3. Applying to wet skin. Pat dry first so it absorbs.
  4. Using too much. A few drops spread further than you think.
  5. Applying on broken skin. Wait until cuts or irritation heal.
  6. Skipping the patch test. 24 hours on the inner arm, every new product.
  7. Not tracking progress. Take before photos: see the before and after gallery for how.
Clinically studied

Why the routine works: the clinical evidence

In a randomized clinical study published in Aesthetic Surgery Journal (2014), 65 people with unwanted underarm hair were assigned to topical cyperus rotundus oil, saline, or an Alexandrite laser (GentleLase). Results were judged three ways: hair counts, independent professionals and patient self-assessment.

=No significant difference vs. laser overall (P>.05)
>Better than laser on white hair (P<.05), on all 3 measures
0Side effects detected in the study
4Published clinical studies on the oil, 600+ people enrolled
"Cyperus rotundus essential oil is as effective as the Alexandrite laser for decreasing the growth of axillary hair (both dark and white)."Study conclusion · Aesthetic Surgery Journal, 2014 · PubMed 24408514

Follow-up randomized trials: 153 people (PubMed 34618367) and 308 people (PubMed 35290702) both recorded significantly reduced hair growth in the cyperus rotundus oil groups; a 153-person trial after laser favored the oil for pain relief (PubMed 34132024).

"I've literally been shaving since I was like 14, and I never made it past day two 😭 I'd be smooth at night, and by the next afternoon it already felt prickly again. ... I shave, put it on, and my skin stays soft instead of getting dry and rough a few hours later. It absorbs so fast too, so I'm not climbing into bed feeling all greasy. ... over time I've noticed my hair growing back slower and finer too."
Roxana G. ✔ Verified buyer
"I swear the worst part of shaving was always the waiting for it to grow back 😭 Started putting this on after my shaves and I've noticed my regrowth is way less noticeable. It takes longer to show up and the hairs feel much finer now. The oil itself is really lightweight too, so I actually enjoy using it instead of forcing myself to remember."

"Funciona bien tengo menos crecicimiento, se aplica diario pero sirve igual de bien que mi hidratante tengo 6 semanas usandolo 🧡"Translation: "Works well, I have less growth. It's applied daily but it works just as well as my moisturizer. I've been using it for 6 weeks."

How to use cyperus rotundus oil: your questions, answered

When should I apply cyperus rotundus oil?

Right after hair removal, when the skin is clean and the follicles are open, and then every morning and evening. Bare Oil's directions: apply once in the morning and once in the evening to the areas with unwanted hair.

How many drops should I use?

3 to 5 drops per body area such as underarms, bikini line or one lower leg, and 1 to 2 drops for small facial areas like the chin or upper lip.

Do I need to remove hair first?

It works best right after shaving, waxing, sugaring or epilating, but keep applying on the days in between too.

Should I wash it off?

No. It's a leave-on oil. It absorbs quickly, so you can dress after a couple of minutes.

How long does a bottle last?

One 60 ml bottle is about a 60-day supply with twice-daily use on one area. Larger areas, like full legs, use more.

How long until I see results?

Softer skin in the first days; slower, finer regrowth typically between weeks 4 and 8. See the 90-day results timeline.

Can I use it with my other skin care?

Yes. Apply Bare Oil first on clean skin, let it absorb, then follow with other products. If you use prescription retinoids or acids, ask your dermatologist.
