Cyperus rotundus oil is a botanical oil pressed from the tuber of the nutgrass plant. Applied daily after shaving or waxing, it has been shown in clinical studies to slow regrowth and make hair come back finer, on every hair color. It does not remove hair on its own. The best cyperus rotundus oil pairs the active with skin soothing ingredients, lists every ingredient, arrives sealed and protected, and is backed by a guarantee. nellaskin Bare Oil was built in the USA to do all four, and it is America's #1 hair inhibitor oil.
What is cyperus rotundus oil?
Cyperus rotundus oil is an essential oil extracted from the small tubers of Cyperus rotundus, a perennial plant known in English as nutgrass, nut grass or purple nutsedge. You will also see it spelled cyprus rotundus oil or cypress rotundus oil, and in Spanish it is sold as aceite de cyperus rotundus. All of these names refer to the same plant.
The plant has a long history in Ayurveda, traditional Chinese medicine and North African and Middle Eastern beauty rituals, where preparations of the root were rubbed into the skin to discourage body hair. Today it is best known as a hair inhibitor oil: a leave-on oil you apply after shaving, waxing, sugaring or epilating so the hair you remove grows back more slowly and more sparsely.
How does cyperus rotundus oil work on hair?
Every hair follicle cycles through a growth phase (anagen), a short transition phase (catagen) and a resting phase (telogen). Shaving and waxing remove the visible hair but leave the follicle untouched, which is why stubble returns within days.
Researchers believe cyperus rotundus oil works at the follicle rather than on the hair shaft. A 2025 scientific review identified flavonoids, alkaloids and saponins in the plant and pointed to a compound called gamma-curcumene as one that suppresses hair growth. The flavonoids also appear to have an anti-androgenic effect on hormone-driven body hair. The result reported in studies is regrowth that is slower, finer and less visible.
Because the oil does not rely on pigment, it works the same way on dark, blonde, red and gray hair. That is a major difference from laser hair removal, which needs dark hair to absorb its light.
What the research says
The clinical evidence on cyperus rotundus oil for unwanted hair comes from a small set of human studies, most led by dermatologist Dr. Ghada Farouk Mohammed.
2012Placebo controlled underarm study
Published in the Journal of Intercultural Ethnopharmacology. Volunteers used cyperus rotundus oil or a placebo after hair removal. Hair counts fell in the oil group, and nearly every participant using the oil reported reduced regrowth, compared with none on placebo.
2014Head to head against Alexandrite laser
A randomized pilot study in Aesthetic Surgery Journal assigned 65 people to cyperus rotundus oil, saline or Alexandrite laser. Results for the oil and the laser were statistically comparable, and the oil performed significantly better on white hair.
2022Randomized, double blind trial
A 153 person trial in Clinical and Experimental Dermatology found a statistically significant decrease in hair growth and better anti-inflammatory effects in the cyperus rotundus oil group than with hydroquinone.
The bottom line: three human trials and a 2025 review point the same way. Cyperus rotundus oil can slow and thin regrowth with minimal side effects. It does not replace hair removal. It makes the hair removal you already do last longer.
What real results look like
Consistency is everything. This customer applied Bare Oil twice a day after hair removal. By week 8, regrowth on her legs was visibly lighter and her skin was smoother, with far less of the red, bumpy texture that comes with frequent shaving.
Benefits of cyperus rotundus oil

How to use cyperus rotundus oil for hair removal
Cyperus rotundus oil works through repetition. This is the routine we recommend for Bare Oil, and it follows how the oil was applied in clinical studies.
- Patch test first. Apply a drop to your inner wrist and wait 24 hours.
- Remove hair as usual. Shaving, waxing, sugaring and epilating all work. Removing hair from the root gives the oil the most direct access to the follicle.
- Apply right after. Use 3 to 5 drops per area on clean, dry skin and massage until absorbed.
- Repeat twice a day. Morning and night, including on days you do not remove hair.
- Give it 4 to 8 weeks. Skin feels softer in week one. Visible slowing of regrowth usually shows between weeks 4 and 8.
Cyperus rotundus oil vs. laser, waxing and shaving
| Bare Oil | Laser | Waxing | Shaving | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Slows regrowth over time | Yes | Yes | Partly | No |
| Blonde, red, gray hair | Yes | No | Yes | Yes |
| Painless | Yes | No | No | Yes |
| At home in 30 seconds | Yes | No | No | Yes |
| Soothes razor burn | Yes | No | No | No |
| Typical cost | About $30 / 2 months | $2,000 to $5,000 | $40 to $90 a visit | Ongoing blades |
For most people the answer is not either-or. Keep your current hair removal method and add cyperus rotundus oil afterward, so each session lasts longer than the one before.
Side effects and who should avoid it
In the published clinical trials, topical cyperus rotundus oil was well tolerated, with minimal side effects reported. As with any botanical oil, a small number of people may react to it.
- Patch test before first use, especially with sensitive skin.
- Do not apply to broken, bleeding or sunburned skin.
- Never use it on the scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes or any hair you want to keep.
- Keep away from eyes and mucous membranes.
- Ask your doctor first if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or treated for a hormonal condition such as PCOS.
- Stop use and rinse with water if redness, itching or burning does not settle.

How to spot a quality cyperus rotundus oil
1. Built for skin after hair removal
Freshly shaved or waxed skin is irritated. A single-ingredient oil does nothing for that. The best cyperus rotundus oils pair the active with ingredients that calm and moisturize.
2. A full, transparent ingredient list
You should be able to read every ingredient on the label and on the brand's website. Vague listings like "natural plant extract" are a red flag.
3. Packaging that arrives intact
Essential oils degrade with light and air, and thin glass droppers crack in transit. An amber glass bottle in a sealed box protects the oil and you.
4. A real brand and a guarantee
A US brand with a website, a support team and a money back guarantee stands behind what is in the bottle. Anonymous marketplace sellers do not.
Frequently asked questions
Does cyperus rotundus oil really stop hair growth?
It does not remove hair, and it will not stop growth overnight. In clinical studies, cyperus rotundus oil applied after hair removal slowed regrowth and made hair grow back finer. In the 2014 pilot study, results were comparable to Alexandrite laser for underarm hair, and better on white hair.
How long does cyperus rotundus oil take to work?
Skin usually feels softer within the first week. Visible slowing of regrowth typically shows between weeks 4 and 8 of twice daily use.
Is cyprus rotundus oil the same as cyperus rotundus oil?
Yes. Cyprus rotundus oil, cypress rotundus oil, nutgrass oil and purple nutsedge oil all come from the same plant. In Spanish, it is aceite de cyperus rotundus.
Does it work on blonde, red or gray hair?
Yes. It does not depend on hair pigment, which makes it one of the few at-home options for light hair that laser cannot treat.
Can I use cyperus rotundus oil on my face?
Many people use it on the upper lip, chin and jawline. Patch test first, keep it away from your eyes, and never apply it near the eyebrows or hairline.
Can men use cyperus rotundus oil?
Yes. It works the same way on chest, back, shoulder and neck hair, and doubles as an aftershave that calms razor burn.
