The star, cyperus rotundus oil, was found as effective as an Alexandrite laser for reducing underarm hair growth in a randomized clinical study.
The ingredient card

1. Cyperus rotundus oil: the star
What it is: an essential oil from the tubers of Cyperus rotundus, a sedge also called nut grass or nagarmotha. More: nagarmotha and nut grass oil explained.
What it does in Bare Oil: reduces hair growth and smooths skin. It's the most important ingredient in the formula and the one with clinical evidence behind it:
- 2014, Aesthetic Surgery Journal: no significant difference from an Alexandrite laser for underarm hair overall, better than laser on white hair, and no side effects detected.
- 2022, Clinical and Experimental Dermatology (153 people): significantly decreased hair growth in favor of the oil.
- 2022, Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology (308 people): hair growth, color and thickness significantly reduced in the oil group only, with no adverse effects found in that group.
- 2022, Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology (153 people): after laser hair removal, matched hydrocortisone for redness and favored for pain relief.
The 2014 study's background notes that the oil's flavonoids have antiandrogenic activity on androgenic hair, one proposed reason it works.
2. Acetyl tripeptide-1
What it is: a small peptide, a short chain of three amino acids, used in skin care.
What it does in Bare Oil: it's on our ingredient card for firming skin and supporting collagen, so skin looks smooth as well as feeling smooth.
3. Aloe extract
What it is: extract from the aloe plant, a classic in after-sun and after-shave care.
What it does in Bare Oil: soothes, hydrates and calms irritation, which is exactly what freshly shaved or waxed skin needs. See our hair removal aftercare guide.
4. Jojoba oil
What it is: a liquid wax pressed from the seeds of the jojoba shrub.
What it does in Bare Oil: moisturizes and balances skin without clogging pores, and helps the formula absorb fast with no greasy feel.
5. Sweet almond oil
What it is: oil pressed from sweet almonds.
What it does in Bare Oil: nourishes and softens dry or irritated skin. Allergy note: almonds are tree nuts. If you have a tree nut allergy, check with your doctor before use.

Customers often mention the scent. That's the oils themselves, not added perfume.
"it actually does work I never expected that from an oil, smells nice too its more of a natural scent"
"I've literally been shaving since I was like 14, and I never made it past day two 😭 I'd be smooth at night, and by the next afternoon it already felt prickly again. ... I shave, put it on, and my skin stays soft instead of getting dry and rough a few hours later. It absorbs so fast too, so I'm not climbing into bed feeling all greasy. ... over time I've noticed my hair growing back slower and finer too."
"No esperaba que me gustara tanto 😭💕 La textura es ligera, se absorbe rápido y no me deja la piel grasosa. Llevo un tiempo usándolo y estoy muy contenta con cómo se ve mi piel y con el crecimiento del vello. 10/10 ✨"Translation: "I didn't expect to like it so much. The texture is light, it absorbs quickly and doesn't leave my skin greasy. I've been using it for a while and I'm very happy with how my skin looks and with the hair growth. 10/10"

The science behind the star ingredient
In a randomized clinical study published in Aesthetic Surgery Journal (2014), 65 people with unwanted underarm hair were assigned to topical cyperus rotundus oil, saline, or an Alexandrite laser (GentleLase). Results were judged three ways: hair counts, independent professionals and patient self-assessment.
"Cyperus rotundus essential oil is as effective as the Alexandrite laser for decreasing the growth of axillary hair (both dark and white)."Study conclusion · Aesthetic Surgery Journal, 2014 · PubMed 24408514
Follow-up randomized trials: 153 people (PubMed 34618367) and 308 people (PubMed 35290702) both recorded significantly reduced hair growth in the cyperus rotundus oil groups; a 153-person trial after laser favored the oil for pain relief (PubMed 34132024).
Bare Oil vs. typical hair removal products
| Bare Oil | Depilatory creams | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Applied after hair removal, to make regrowth slower and finer | Chemically dissolves hair at the surface |
| Fragrance | No added fragrance | Often fragranced |
| Feel | Lightweight oil, absorbs fast | Cream left on, then wiped off |
| Clinical evidence | Key ingredient matched laser in a randomized study | Removes hair, doesn't slow regrowth |
How to use it
- Remove hair your way. Shave, wax, sugar or epilate.
- Apply right after. 3 to 5 drops per area on clean, dry skin. Massage until absorbed.
- Repeat morning and night. Every day, including days you don't remove hair.
- Stay consistent for 4 to 8 weeks. Results compound with every application.
Safety: for external use only. Patch test on the inner arm for 24 hours before the first full use. Avoid eyes, broken or irritated skin. Pregnant or breastfeeding? Ask your doctor first. Full guide: how to use cyperus rotundus oil.
